Pilanesberg Overnight Safaris

Pilanesberg National Park is the 4th largest game reserve in South Africa and home to the Big Five

A Pilanesberg Overnight safari is ideal for a week end

The 55 000 hectares (132 000 acres) of Pilanesberg National Park are home to some 10 000 animals and the park is now one of the privileged reserves hosting the Big Five and 364 species of bird.

Only 2 hours scenic drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, a Pilanesberg overnight safari is ideal to explore the big five African bush on a limited time schedule.

The Pilanesberg National Park, which is situated a 2 hour drive north west of Johannesburg / Pretoria, is characterized by impressive volcanic mountain forms and rolling savannah grasslands 1300 million years old. These impressive features have created one of the most topographically diverse Reserves to be found in South Africa. The 55 000 hectares (132 000 acres) of Pilanesberg National Park are home to some 10 000 animals and the park is now one of the privileged reserves hosting the Big Five and 364 species of bird. A major reason for Pilanesberg's diversity of animals is that it lies in the transition zone between the arid Kalahari in the west and the humid Lowveld of the Northwest Province. The seven different habitats at the Pilanesberg attract and cultivate prolific birdlife.

This is a Malaria free area.

Did You Know?
...These interesting facts about the Pilanesberg:

The Pilanesberg is situated in a transition zone between the dry Kalahari Thornveld and Lowveld bush, animals, birds and vegetation are diverse with uncharacteristic overlapping of species from both zones. it is the only park in South Africa with both Impala and Springbok at home.

The creation of Pilanesberg is considered as one of the most ambitious programmes of its kind to be undertaken anywhere in the world. Thanks to Operation Genesis in 1979 to re-introduce long-vanished species to the park involved the game-fencing of the reserve and was the largest relocation of wild animals at the time.

Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Only one of three alkaline ring volcano's in the world and ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.
